Waiver Wire Origin

In 1934 with Art Rooney's Steelers out of the playoff chase, he dropped two players in a  pre-arranged deal that the Giants would pick them up. The Redskins protest prevailed and  it was disallowed. Thereafter the league rule  was developed where all teams could  compete for dropped players in order of the worst league record at the time. Thus, the  waiver wire system was born.
